As the clock struck midnight, this Cinderfella cued for his 3rd red-eye of 2015.  Marathon #20 destination: South Carolina.

today’s travel log – cheap flight to Florence SC Regional Airport (via Charlotte), followed by an hour half drive to Myrtle Beach. [always looking to save a buck – this 50 State Quest isn’t cheap – crazy, alternative travel plans add flavor to the journey.]

Myrtle Beach.  Hmmm…ocean.  downside: coldest temps of the year.  40mph wind gusts off the Atlantic made for a chilly 25°.

Runner Expo, bib pick-up – then phoned to confirm my Alligator Adventure was still a possibility.  Alligators don’t feed during winter months but because they’re sluggish in the cold, I’d most likely be able to hold one.  Sweet!

Gator shows are pure redneck entertainment – and that’s ok by me 🙂  Didn’t understand much of the young showman’s dialect (subtitles would have helped) – but impressed to see him pull out one, then two juvenile gators for our small crowd.

[First reptile nipped him.  Wrapped electrical tape on his wound, then tossed the small gator back. Blood ran down his hand, which he promptly rinsed in the sludgy pond, before grabbing a 2nd gator by the neck.  Yep, redneck entertainment – LOL>]

Having missed out on seeing gators before both Louisiana & Florida marathons, today satisfied my curiosity.

Hotel check-in & a pasta dinner rounded out evening activities.  [Met 2 marathoners from Wisconsin while in Jackson MS’ airport last month & kinda invited myself along to dinner tonite.  Thanks again Toni!]

Early to bed, early to rise – 26.2 South Carolina miles loom ahead in the a.m.  FAAANNNTASTIC!

Marathon’d one-third of America in 2014 & never flew a red-eye.  This year already have 4 scheduled thru March.  Price a guy pays to reach East Coast races (& use minimal vacation days) 🙂

Left Denver at 1:20am, arriving in Miami just after 7am EST.  Shared costs with fellow Maniac Stacy this trip, who met me at the airport in a rental (Stacy flew red-eye into nearby Fort Lauderdale).  Super fun sharing my 48-hour tropical get-away with another marathoner – generally lotta solo travel in my 50 State Quest.

Grabbed juice & water, then headed Downtown for an early lunch at Havana 1957 – in Miami, a Cubano is the must-eat.

A Cubano is a variation of a ham and cheese originally created in cafes catering to Cuban workers in the early Cuban immigrant communities of Florida.  The sandwich is made with ham, roasted pork, Swiss cheese, pickles, mustard, and sometimes salami on Cuban bread.

Checked into a downtown apartment near tomorrow’s race Start (used Airbnb, cheaper than a traditional hotel), then trekked a mile to meet our scheduled afternoon tour.  Kayaking in Biscayne Nat’l Park was Plan A (cancelled – big waves & strong ocean undertow), Airboat Tour was Plan B (unfortunately tour bus never showed – argh).

Easy to suffer a letdown when plans go awry (& operating on little sleep).  This is where travelling double really ROCKS.  Only 4 miles from the nearest public beach so ‘beach day’ it is.  Thanks Stacy.

Caught a few winks on the sand – re-centered & re-energized, now ready to explore.  Stacy spotted a market-size crab hiding in rocks near the marina shoreline.  HUGE!  Ventured further south thru Key Biscayne to Cape Florida State Park – more white-powder sand, pelicans AND a lighthouse.  FAAANNNTASTIC!  Ya’ll know I LOVE lighthouses.

Sometimes the best plans are travelling with no plans at all 🙂

Early to bed, early to rise – tomorrow is run day…but not before downing a plate of squid.  I AM a fan of the ocean.  YUM!

It’s been a busy Fall season – lotta work, lotta marathoning — and a warm one too!  After an early September 11th flurry fest, unfortunately saw no snow in October – zero, nada, zilch.

Autumn has always been my favourite season – foliage colour & cooler temps.  LOVE it!  Always feel like – yes! made it thru another summer 🙂  Autumn = hot apple cider, pumpkins & county fairs.

Having Ash & Tom as housemates meant homemade pumpkin cookies for our fur babies, Ro & Marty, festive outdoor decorations AND a whole lotta Halloween candy for costumed trick-or-treaters while I travelled to Indy.  Fall 2014 = a new car for Ash after her Jeep Liberty was crushed by a deer (5pm, in traffic, in Boulder — shows it can happen to anyone).

Autumn = Football.  I’ve seen more NFL this season than I have in years.  In addition to the weekly office pool, Ash & Tom are part of multiple fantasy football leagues.  It’s crazy, dysfunctional fun — Ash’s rooting for the Bengal’s kicker, a wide receiver from Arizona & Denver’s quarterback.  Whereas last year I watched the Broncos & [New England] Patriots (old habits die hard), this year my house is engaged all week.  Monday night, Thursday night & all day Sunday.  Will be sad to see the season end.

so long summer, FALL has arrived.  #ROOOOOAAAAARRRR
