trail-running

When you review your race schedule & see ‘car camping’ as an option for lodging, ya know the weekend’s gonna be an adventure.  From now ‘til May 6th, travelling every weekend.  4 time zones, 2 continents, trail, road & a 50K too!  Yep, gonna be an adventure 🙂

Landed before midnite in the City of Brotherly Love.  Picked up my rental, then drove north 2 hours on some of America’s worst pocked roads.  Rain & fog.  Not ideal but considering this area received more than a foot of snow just 2 weeks ago, gonna look at the positive.  Tunes up, speed down, followed a big truck all the way to Reading.  7 miles further, parked outside Blue Marsh Lake.

7am start, bib pick-up the hour before.  Doing the math: notta lotta sleep between touchdown & takeoff.

Why an early season trail race?  Why the Naked Prussian?  Grassroots event.  Was sold on the site’s simple write-up.  Rolling elevation in Pennsylvania’s forested Alleghanies.  Cheapest race I’ve probably entered, just a dollar a mile.  No medal, no shirt – but aid stations fueled for trail.  Trail = food.  If road marathons would catch the fever, I’d finish with a few more smiles.

Trail running and ultra running is growing fast.  As races start to sell out across the country, entry fees for these races seem to go up almost as fast as we have seen the last couple of years in the road running scene.  Some bigger ultra trail runs are now owned and operated by bigger for profit corporations and fees for these races are now hundreds of dollars.  Running some of these big name destination races might be cool, but it is something most of us can only afford once or twice a year.  Many trail-runner do enjoy racing often throughout the year.  So where can you race the rest of the year, preferable locally and for little money?  The Naked Prussian is a great option to run/race locally for a very low entry fee.  If you sign up early enough your fee will be less the $1 per mile for the ultra and less the $1 per k for the marathon.  This is only possible because we chose a location that does not slap us with big permit fees, we don’t give you expensive swag (hence the Naked Prussian) because most of you don’t need another race shirt or a flashy 3 pound medal (we will give a little finisher memento) and we are not hiring some aging rockband to entertain you along the course.

The Naked Prussian takes place on the trails around Blue Marsh Lake.  These trails are not very rocky or difficult but are true single track trails that require some attention.  These trails are great for beginners and the speedy runners alike.  The rolling elevation of the trails will keep everybody occupied.  The course is not flat or super easy but is doable for most with proper training.  Join us next spring to start the new trail running season.

26.2 Miles, 50 Miler Trail Ultra

Nite rain ended during my 3 hour snooze.  Woke to sunshine & cool temps – & now surrounded by cars.  Across the parking lot, 2 porta potties & a large man playing an accordion.  Start of the 50 miler, 30 minutes to shake out the cobwebs.

New today?  No earbuds, no tunes.  Cutting the tie.  All part of the plan.  Will run stronger, smarter – mentally tougher by Bighorn.  Dialing in my surroundings, appreciating the journey.  Lotta hours to fight head demons but absolutely doable.  This will happen.

Single track trail thru whole lotta forest.  LOVE LOVED today’s run.  Ran steady, stayed in my head & ran strong.

Start-to-finish joy of running.  Ok, maybe not during the HUGE climb at mile 15 – LOL>  Won’t see it in my time results but mission accomplished.  No music, no puking, finished with a smile ❤

Last 5 miles – FLAT dirt trail ‘longside a high-running tributary of Blue Marsh Lake.  FAAAANNNNTASTIC!

Naked Prussian Trail Marathon

Week between Christmas & New Year – 23rd thru January 2nd – unexpectedly (first time ever) workplace stayed closed, restarting production after the New Year.  Count it: 10 days off (including weekends).  FAAANNNNTASTIC!

GREAT to have extra time over the holidays.  10 days though, this body gets antsy.  Too late to coordinate a family trip but ’nuff time to late-register for a holiday-week marathon 🙂  The Huff, a 50K trail run in rural Indiana…in winter.  Hmmm.

Early Friday a.m. flight to Indianapolis, 2+ hour drive to Columbia City.  13 degrees & overcast.  Breakfast/lunch/brunch – 5am day start, 2-hour (Eastern) clock jump, time for Indiana food.  Snow & colder temps expected 2nd half of day.

Bib pick-up at the print shop which produced our swag shirts.  LOVE the Midwest – friendliest folks in the U.S. ❤

Hotel check-in – one gal shop.  Same friendly face answered the phone, mopped the front lobby (lotta traveller tracks) AND pushed snow outta handicap parking.  Was there in the morning when I checked out too.  Give that lady a raise!  WOW!

Dinner-dined at Chapman’s, directly ‘cross from the County Courthouse.  Standing-room only in this 6-table diner.  THE place for eats in downtown Columbia City.  Cajun shrimp bowl – tasty, filled the gut.  Back on the road, mile-half hotel return, 3 inches of fresh powder. Parked the rental, cranked room heat to HIGH (ice had formed on window inside).  COLD blustery nite.

Saturday race day.  Woke early, scraped & warmed the car.  30-45 minute drive to Chain O’ Lakes Park in Albion.  Winter wonderland.

Arrived 10 minutes til Race Start.  2 degrees above zero & SNOW.  THIS is when runners wear spikes – which unfortunately, I failed to pack.  Gonna be a Slip & Slide kinda day.  2-lap course, Drop Bag in the Main Tent, food & change of socks awaiting.

Chain O’Lakes State Park: Beautiful wooded trails, difficult weathered terrain.  Fresh snow covered long up-n-down stretches of melted/refrozen ice.  Tough slow-going trek & C-O-L-D ❄

iPod froze, no music.  iPhone froze – one pic, one choppy video.  C-O-L-D.

2nd water bottle on my hydration vest FROZE SOLID, only 8 miles in.  3 Aid Stations.  Remember the third one best – HUGE bon fire.  Camped there 15-20 minutes & drank slushy Coke (only liquid which didn’t freeze in the sub-zero wind).  5 miles more.

Back in the Main Tent, located my Drop Bag & worked off my shoes.  Cheeks & beard coated in ice.  Slurred speech.  Tongue stopped working.  This is CRAZY.  What am I doing?  50 yards into the 2nd lap, I turned back.  Told the race officials, no mas.  Penciled my name on a handwritten list (yep, their pen had frozen – HA!).  DNF.  [More than 50% of today’s field did the same.]

McDonald’s splash bath & a large order of fries.  Happy to be on my way HOME.  Tough way to end the year.

Hey now – no tears here.  Kickin’ off 2018 with FAMILY on the Big Island, Hawaii.

Sis’ birthday run (Hilo to Volcano 50K) just 7 days away.  4000ft climb (ocean-to-mountain).  H-U-G-E !

Who signs up for a 50K trail run only 4 days before the event?  Yep, that happened this week.

Received a promo email for The Bear Chase Trail Race last weekend, Friday before New Hampshire.  Generally I delete these (my run schedule’s set 6 months out) but was out-of-town/travelling soooo the ad stayed in my Inbox.

Home sweet Colorado Home.  Cool & overcast all week, highs never topped 60 (GREAT weather).  Didn’t have a great run in Keene (REDEMPTION).  Short miles this month in my Run the Year challenge (Sept 30th race) AND only 45 minutes from Home.

I know, I know – crazy ‘healthy‘ addiction.  Paid FULL price & promised Ro we’d hike tomorrow 🙂

Saturday morning.  Hydration vest outta the closet, packed a drop bag – pickles/watermelon/chicken noodle soup, change of clothes (shirt/socks).  I’m my own crew today.  Socks?  Yep, NINE water crossings – 6 of those, knee deep water.  LOVE LOVED it!

Missed bib pick-up night before (work obligation).  Arrived half-hour early in Lakewood’s Bear Creek Lake Park.  FREE parking ($10 fee waived for runners).  Volunteer handed me a Bib, 4 safety pins & my Bear Chase tech shirt.  BAM, done.

2nd time in a month, I’d be running the event’s low-mile race.  100K, 50 mile or 50K – that’s it.  First time since April 2016, I actually registered for a 50K (ran 3 last year).  Marathon 6 miles.  Baby steps.  I see a 50-mile race in my 2018 future.

Sun rose pink over Bear Creek Lake, hats off for the National Anthem & we were off.  Bunched up at the first water crossing, then hiked UP the first of three big climbs.  Backside of hill?  I flew.  Since REVEL Rockies training this Spring, I’m a much better downhill runner.

Easiest trail terrain to date – rolling hills, root-free course (my trail nemesis).  Ran strong first 14 miles.  Lost my mojo during the sun-exposed 6.9 miles ‘round Fox Hollow Golf Course.  No tree, no shade, no wind.  Popped in the ear-buds, tried to flood my head with sound.

Last loop (18.8 miles in), half marathon distance to go.  Dilly-dallied 10 minutes at Bag Drop.  Re-clothed (dry shirt/dry socks), bathroom break, swallowed a half-thermos of chicken noodle.  Departed with a fresh bottle of electrolytes.

Last climb UP, right quad cramped.  Unfamiliar territory.  Nearby runner asked if I needed salt tabs.  I thanked him, swallowed both & hoped for a miracle.  I’m a puker, not a cramper.  Limped/walked the climb, limped/jogged the backside.

Clouds rolled in, temp dropped 10-15 degrees, winds kicked up.  No sun, no headphones…no need.  Quad cramp ceased.  My miracle.

Slow pace – 12/min mile – but I kept moving.  Shoulders back, no walk, no slog.  Head voices stopped.  Focused on a guy in white, later a couple both dressed in red.  Approached, paced closed behind, then passed/moved ahead.  Ninth & final water crossing.

Less than a mile to go AND… I lost the trail.  Are you kidding me??  Bush-whacked thru high grass & willow thicket.  Crossed a paved road, met a 100K runner.  Had run past the Finish by more than half a mile.  Disappointed…but back on trail – I kept moving.

Actually came up BEHIND the Finish.  7 hours – that’s a looooong time but I FINISHED.  32 miles total.  WOW!  ALSO surprisingly, compared with 2016 results – cut more than an hour off my best time.  Today’s run a 50K PR.

Out like a LION (September), in with a ROAR (October) – starting tomorrow with a high-altitude hike.  Gotta, hafta – promised the pup, right?  LOVE LOVE my Colorado life ❤
