Shakespeare & classic 70’s tunes – the connection?  Enjoyed both OUTDOORS this week in Boulder County.

Colorado Shakespeare Festival (Boulder) –  “Half-moon outdoor arena, center aisle seat, Flatirons sunset, temps in the low 70’s – yep, pretty much PERFECT.”  Stole the line from 2015; saw Othello that summer.

Fast forward 2 years: 2017, the Festival’s 60th Season.

Hamlet, Julius Caesar – nope, threw my money at Henry VI Part III.  Absolutely no idea what to expect.  Yep, completely on purpose.

Different kind of performance.  Similar to Shakespeare’s time, actors were given just 20 hours to learn their lines.  Introduce Hadley [Kamminga-Peck], Dramaturg & Prompter.  Kinda fun to see actors miss lines, turn to the lady seated off-stage & request dialogue.

What else was unique?  Audience members were provided red or white flags (Lancaster or York) – & encouraged to root for their ‘House’.  “Take off his head” I screamed.  20 minutes later, booed/hissed when a member of my House, Clifford, was slain.

Typical Shakespeare – inconvenient marriages, 2 families vie for King, whole lotta slaughter.  Unfortunately, nite didn’t end well for Team Red.

Tonite’s STAR – Queen Margaret, House of Lancaster.  Wore a sword, led an army. The crowd cheered ‘Henry’, I bellowed: MARGARET!!

NOT the Shakespeare of my youth.  Far exceeded all expectations – FAANNN-frickin-TASTIC!

[2014] Kicked off the weekend at Louisville Street Faire listening to live outdoor music, filling up on pizza & ice cream…

[2015] Bowling, “Toy Story” Uno (family game night), Louisville Street Faire – and blink…it’s time for all to go home…

Street Faire (Louisville) –  All summer, every Friday night on Front Street (just off Main).  Food, booze, crafts & LIVE music.  Not sure what excuse I was floating last year – but 2017, happy to be back in the WIN column.  Loser streak over.

Louisville residents skew mighty GRAY.  Tonite’s band: Firefall.  Honest, had to Google-search but strangely remember their late ‘70’s-era hits.  [thanks Mom 🙂 ]

Super FUN nite – LOVE LOVE my Colorado home ❤

Firefall is a rock band that formed in Boulder, Colorado in 1974.  The band’s biggest hit single, “You Are the Woman”, peaked at No. 9 on the Billboard charts in 1976.  Other hits included “Just Remember I Love You” (#11 in 1977), “Strange Way” (#11 in 1978), “Cinderella” (#34 in 1977), “Headed for a Fall” (#35 in 1980), and “Staying with It” (#37 in 1981) with female vocalist Lisa Nemzo.

Christmas Eve.  2 days after my last chemo treatment, more hair loss, still tired…but mentally recharged.  It’s over.  Nothing official until my next endoscopy in mid-January but chemo’s over.  Done.

Worked all during treatment; took a few half-days near the end.  Marathon’d all year; every month, no misses.

First day back in the gym; hit it hard today.  7 miles, 9:30/min pace – not pretty, sweated like a bad college hangover but 7 miles on the treadmill.  I’ll take it.  FAAAANNNNTASTIC!

Goal setting time.  Calendar says 8 days ‘til the New Year – my 2017 started today.

  • run every day: at least one mile, every single day
    • building consistency & strength; ultimate goal: Iceland’s Fire & Ice 250K, Aug 2018
  • finish this year’s 2,016 miles, then bang out another 2,017 – all before Christmas Eve 2017
  • 26 marathons including my first 50-miler
  • not only sub-4 again but set a new marathon PR (didn’t sub-4 all year, PR’s stood since March 2015)
  • marathon #100 in Dublin Ireland (October 29th – can’t fail if you don’t try 🙂 )

That’s my barebones outline, folks.  Shoot me a copy of yours.

Kicking off January 1st marathoning an hour north of Tampa.  Other than that, life’s a clean slate, no set schedule.  More family, more friends, more overseas adventure.  Dreamin’ up something BIG for 2017!  #noregretlife

Holiday feasting over, woke Friday to sunshine.

After transporting Miss M to/from her facial appointment (who doesn’t need a day of beauty?), grabbed some toast at Moxie Bread Company on Main & walked over to Mudslingers Pottery.

Asked Michaela what she wanted to do while in Colorado.  Ceramics.  I blame this entirely on my sister. Sis’ 4th of July reunion activities were a BIG hit with MY fam.

Hmm…ceramics.  I could certainly one-up that, right?  How ‘bout instead of just painting a piece, we actually sculpt & create something on a pottery wheel – bang out the whole process, from clay to final product.  How hard could it be?

Telling ya upfront – LOOKS are DECEIVING, whole lot easier in the movies 🙁

At Mudslingers Pottery School in old town Louisville, Colorado, people of all ages and ability levels come together in a relaxed but vibrant atmosphere to explore ceramic arts. We offer tools, support and instruction to help stimulate the artist in us all.

6 weeks of lessons, jam-packed into a 4-hour session.  Whole lotta chatter…learned the history of clay/various types of clays, wedging & eventually molding that clay on a potter’s wheel.

Girls RULE this sport.  re-worded for clarity: Girls DOMINATE pottery.

Multiple attempts at keeping my clay ON the wheel – zing, zing, zing…and off it’d go.  Even with an apron, would leave today wearing my creation.  Mud up the arms, pant legs, couple swipes on the brow..a sloppy mud mess.

Fast forward another hour – created something bowl-like.  Success, done.

Oh we’re not done yet…heck no.  Instructor John says we still have 45 minutes to create a 2nd piece – are you KIDDING me?  And now that we know how to use the wheel, we’re attempting beer steins (at least that’s what I’m calling my taller bowl/pot).

Like parachuting from a plane, great to try once in life.   Yep, just like that.  LOL>

Back in December to paint my ‘art’, then it’s history.  One & done folks, one & done.

UPDATE (Feb 2017):  3 months later – baked, glazed & kiln’d again.  Our FINAL product ROCKS, huh?  LOVE LOVE it!  Thanks Ash & Tom for following up with Instructor John & finishing our pieces.  Whatta surprise!  Couldn’t face Herr Potter again – just couldn’t do it.
