2 days in Yellowstone, day plan to finish our Montana summer vacation in the Grand Tetons.
Checked out of our Ennis MT digs & started the journey south, ‘cross the Continental Divide, thru Idaho – in particular: Ashton, Idaho. Trip wouldn’t have been complete without visiting our country’s Seed Potato capitol. HA! True dat – but Ashton visiting Ashton [Idaho] was more the prime motive 🙂
Ashton ID: population 1127. Photo shot ‘round every local sign – then plotted east. Dropped off any/all major roads & unexpectedly trekked 32 miles on dirt. Stopped 7 miles in; wide expanse of lily pads & pine. Quiet, peaceful. Just dragonflies & forest.
2 hours in Targhee National Forest, popped up on Flagg Ranch, inside Grand Teton Nat’l Park. Never saw a ranger, never passed a booth. Score! (reality is: I carry an annual park pass anyway)
Scrapped plans to hike Jenny Lake & travelled south & east another hour to Moran Junction (the Park’s East entrance), past Jackson Lake Lodge, up Pacific Creek Road & 5 miles of gravel.
Destination: Teton Horseback Adventures
Ash mentioned 2 days earlier…wouldn’t it be great to horseback ride in the mountains? Heck yeah. Multiple water crossings, spectacular high peak backdrop. GREAT idea!
Gazed ‘cross Jenny Lake – all vacations come to an end – then dined BIG, 20 minutes south in Jackson [Wyoming]. Air bnb fail in Driggs [Idaho] but luckily Ash secured a last-minute room locally. [The digs in Driggs, a youth hostel bunk bed share – wee bit old to share a room with teens.]
Long ride home across Wyoming on I-80, 10 hour drive (thanks Tom). Back to work in the a.m.
Summer time fun – 2nd family trip of July. FAAANNNTASTIC!

Yellowstone: Part 3 – the Tetons
Last day in St Lou-ie. Grant’s Farm – Sis pulled out all the stops.
…one time owned by Ulysses S. Grant and prior to that, by the Dent family. It is now owned by the Busch family, who owned the Anheuser-Busch Brewing Company for many years until it was sold to InBev in 2008. Grant’s Farm has been an animal reserve for many years and is open to the public for free. The farm is home to such animals as buffalo, elephants, camels, kangaroos, donkeys, goats, peacocks, the iconic Budweiser Clydesdales and many more. Most of these animals can be seen by visitors on a tram tour of the deer park region of the park, while the Clydesdales are found in their nearby barn and pastures. The farm also contains a cabin called “Hardscrabble,” which was built by Ulysses S. Grant on another part of the property and later relocated to Grant’s Farm. It is the only remaining structure that was hand-built by a U.S. president prior to assuming office.
Started off the day with a tram ride thru Deer Park – where deer, buffalo & native birds roamed the grounds free. Additionally, snapped a sweet shot of Grant’s Cabin, early home to our 18th President Ulysses S. Grant.
- Grant’s Cabin
Disembarked in Tier Garten, where for a $1 the family got to bottle-feed baby goats.
Price was certainly right – everyone joined in the fun. Highlight of the day 🙂 From there, things turned animal-exotic. Grant’s Farm houses elephants, kangaroo, zebra, camels, llamas, lemur & multiple varieties of birds. Much to see.

The Bauernhof
German for “farmstead”, The Bauernhof was built in 1913. It surrounds a beautiful courtyard typical of a 19th century Bavarian farm, complete with stables, a carriage house, and offices and quarters for those who lived and worked there. Today, it houses the Busch family’s world-renowned carriage collection and stables.
Sis’ husband (a St Louis native) provided historical facts ’bout the Busch family, as we stable-walked by horses & carriages of days past — all started with German-immigrants Adolphus Busch & his father-in-law, Eberhard Anheuser in 1879.
‘Over 21s’ paused at the Budweiser Brewery trailer – chilled in the cooler & free sample imbibed 🙂
- look who’s 23?
Finished? Heck no.
No Anheuser-Busch trip is complete without visiting the world famous Clydesdales. MASSIVE creatures — WOW!
The Clydesdale is a breed of draught horse derived from the farm horses of Clydesdale, Scotland, and named after that region. Often bay in color, they show significant white markings due to the presence of sabino genetics. The breed was originally used for agriculture and haulage, and is still used for draught purposes today. The Budweiser Clydesdales are some of the most famous Clydesdales, and other members of the breed are used as drum horses by the British Household Cavalry.
- MASSIVE!
Rain started falling as we began our goodbyes. Michaela’s trip ended first, home on a 3pm flight to Connecticut. The rest of us however kept adventuring – day’s last stop: Fitz’s Bottling Company.
[while waiting for a table] Watched a line of black cherry soda being bottled. Crazy busy joint. My food memory? the Mt Everest Special – Fitz’s famous draft Root Beer topped with vanilla & chocolate ice cream PLUS whipped cream. H-U-G-E!
- soda factory known for its root beer floats
- the Mt Everest special

Sadly all great vacations come to an end – but for Team Colorado, still one more show to go.
Landed in Denver at 9-ish. On the 45-minute drive home, saw no less than 10 firework displays – brightly colored explosions from both sides of the Interstate. No exaggeration…most every Foothills community was celebrating the 4th under clear Colorado skies.
Happy Independence Day, USA!
Grant’s Farm (St Louis 2016)
Flying to Hartford for this weekend’s marathon was like flying home. Before Colorado, I lived in New Haven & worked NYC for 9 years – whole lotta memories. Family, friends, marathon, friends, more friends – that was the plan.
Started Friday with breakfast at the Cosmic Omelet, then shared the day with family – FAAANNNTASTIC! Bib pick-up 20 minutes away in Hartford, then watched Michaela doll it up for a neighborhood character lunch, promoting her entertainment company, Once Upon a Fairytale CT. After months of following her progress on social media & the web, was super fun to see the girl the action. Well done, so very proud!
What happens when you combine a professional makeup artist with a lifelong obsession with storybook characters? You get Once Upon a Fairytale CT.
Our story begins with a young autistic boy named David. Who has spent most of his life in love with his fairytale characters and visiting the world they live in.
The story continues with a woman trained in the art of makeup and transformation. A beauty and special effects makeup artist, Michaela was trained at Marinello School of Beauty and Chic Studios NYC. In 2012 Michaela launched her own freelance makeup artist company “Glam It Looks”. And in 2014 started Once Upon a Fairytale CT. Using her skills our characters leap off the pages with the most accurate looks in the business….
Late dinner, even later to bed, tough a.m. marathon start. No regrets – 50 State Quest is much more than a running journey.
Fast forward to Saturday nite – still tight from the day’s marathon finish, my 5th consecutive weekend running – drove an hour south to Guilford, home of my Connecticut bestie, Dawn. Why do I love Dawn? Big heart, no soul more honest, loves life, loves to laugh, amazing chef & horse passionate. Her farmhouse in southern CT is something out of a magazine. You ever need to get away & recharge, spend a weekend with Dawn. Hot tub, dinner, laughs – movie, conversation, cards, more conversation.
Hate to waste hours sleeping. Up early; at the barn, watched Dawn feed Rudy & Spot. Special treat: Dawn harnessed Spot & showed off the new carriage (rode alongside Quonnipaug Lake). Whatta experience! Thanks my friend.
Late flight return to Colorado meant one more stop before the airport – 30 minutes shoreline-south to Branford, where we met up with Andrea, Betsey & friends for brunch & a walk along the beach. Ocean breeze, sea gulls, sunshine, peace.
Returning to work Monday morning, gonna be a struggle. New England vacation in 3 days – friends, family, food, horses, beach AND my 41st marathon – lot more to Connecticut than folks give credit, not simply a halfway point between Boston & NYC.
- marathon weekend #41
