Nope, not THAT ‘On Golden Pond’ but this Boulder County hike still made our 2012 list.
A co-worker recommended I visit her hometown of Longmont and try Golden Ponds.
After thoroughly eviscerating a cattail, Ro completed his weekly ‘ice walk’ — 2nd weekend in a row.
Windy, cool walk but marked Ro’s longest car ride to date — 30 minutes to Longmont. LOVED the Canadian geese — all huddled together, chattering, then TAKE-OFF with surprising huge wing spans. Geese — another new life experience for Ro. Done, check 🙂
Capped off our hike with a crisp view of Long’s Peak — one of Colorado’s 52 14ers — mountains which exceed 14,000 ft elevation.
FAAANTASTIC !

- Cattail attack!
- Hey look — Geese!
- Let me off the leash — I can swim this!
- Long’s Peak (Reason #103: Why we call this HOME)
- New fav chew – Pig Ears (sorry my vegan friends…Ro got bored with pumpkin)
Still limited a bit by drive time. Read that North Boulder parks are overcrowded by prairie dogs – so much so that ‘relocation vs extermination’ was the focal point of the local news story. So…another new life experience. Done; check 🙂
Online research led me to believe that prairie dogs hibernate in the winter – not so!
Wonderland Lake was all iced over (normal for January) so Ro tentatively attempted his first ice walk. Energized by seeing plant life trapped under the ice, Ro eased past the shore in an effort to chew & devour. Lucky for him I brought along snacks because these reeds were deep under the ice & not budging. Fun watching little guy move out on the ice – ‘Bambi’ reminiscent.
After learning to walk on water, we approached prairie dog village. Only slightly smaller than Ro, but these dogs chirp, chirp, chirp – and chirp. Camouflaged well in our winter grasses – if only they could keep down the noise. LOL>

- Can I jump in?
- Hey wait..I can walk on this water
- Prairie dogs…don’t they hibernate?
- What are those…awesome, they chirp!
- catch me if you can
- Aw…where’d he go?
New Year’s Resolution was to hike 52 unique (weekly) hikes in 2012.
Since it is almost the middle of January, no time like the present to start! Key motivator? Trying to tire out a 3-month old puppy. Just gotta find a way to stop the constant chewing. Fingers need a break from puppy teeth – kinda embarrassed by the number of Band-Aids on my hands at present. LOL>
Puppy’s first hike AND puppy’s first car ride. Ro didn’t get car sick but I did good to keep my car on the road. I can drive in the snow – no problem. It’s doing all my driving left-handed while using the right to push/keep pup in the back-seat – all while driving in the snow. Might limit our choice of hikes for January.
Another new life experience – done, check 🙂
Limited this first hike to just under 4 miles – seemed longer because of the snow. FANNNTASTIC being outside! LOVE LOVE this life! And lucky for me, Ro is both – ‘Sno Ro’ and ‘Super Ro’. He loves the snow…and loves to hike. Little guy is a machine.
