Thursday night many of us gathered at PS Audio (my Boulder-based employer) & in lieu of a holiday dinner, gave back to local families in need – an initiative endorsed by our CEO Paul McGowan.
I’m really not a shopper – even for my own family – but when it was all said & done…gifts gathered, wrapped & stacked on the conference room table, felt a sense of pride being involved.
Easy to get caught up in the day-to-day.
Many thanks to PS’ General Manager, Jim who organized this year’s event.
An idea worth spreading by Paul McGowan
Christmas is fast approaching and we are reminded this is a time of giving. There are many in our community that haven’t as much as we do. There are families that struggle to make ends meet, to heat their homes, to put healthy food on the table. For some in our community Christmas doesn’t mean opening presents under the tree. Each year we try and fix that for as many as we can. It’s an idea worth spreading.
My wife Terri came up with a plan that puts smiles on family’s faces and builds teamwork at the company. That’s a winning combination by anyone’s standards.
There are 25 employees at PS Audio and they, along with their family members, gather one evening after work. The group is divided into four teams and each team is assigned a family in need. Armed with a list of the family’s ages, their wishes for gifts and an envelope filled with cash, each team is sent out for one hour to buy everything on the list. As we scatter through the stores of Boulder, it’s a bit of a frenzy but fun. We meet back with bags of goods and set them up on four tables piled high with the presents. The best sales person on the team has to then present the lot of presents to everyone else and we vote for who did the best job. After the winning team is selected we share pizza, cider and cookies and wrap all the presents.
What we do is simple and can be repeated in your community. We’ve found the families in a number of different ways over the years such as community food bank programs or the local church. The first year PS Audio contributed $50 cash for each family member. This year we upped it to $100 per person. It’s not a lot of money but it brings a lot of joy to families in the community and, perhaps as important, to our team. It’s an event we look forward to each year.
It’s an idea worth spreading in your company, your community, or even your family. It’s an idea that needs to be considered this year, not put off to next.
Send us a picture when you do. And thank you. It matters.
The Ice Bucket Challenge went viral 2 months ago, raising funds & bringing awareness to ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease).
Social media feeds have been jammed with ALS challenge videos from family, friends, friends of friends, sports & movie stars, industry leaders & even former US Presidents.
Awesome to see folks from all walks of life doing something selfless, showing a little humility AND donating to a common cause.
Since June, I’ve voyeured in silence, haven’t hit ‘like’ or added Facebook comments – laid low, drawn no attention, thought I’d been spared. Happy Birthday Keenan! from cousin Chuck & wife Marla – then BAM I was nominated. Thanks cuz!
Within 24 hours of being challenged, participants have to record a video of themselves in continuous footage.
First, they are to announce their acceptance of the challenge followed by pouring ice into a bucket of water. The bucket is lifted & poured over the participant’s head. Then the participant can call out a challenge to other people. …the participant is expected to donate $10 if they have poured the ice water over their head or donate $100 if they have not.
There have now been so many videos – literally thousands – how to make this challenge my own?
Asked Ash & Tom to join me Monday to hike Mount Sanitas in Boulder. Hit the trail just before 6pm, my bladder bag full of now mostly melted ice (downside of hiking on a work day). Upside? Hiking on a Monday night – dogs couldn’t have been any happier 🙂
Trekked at a fast clip to summit before nightfall. BONUS – not only helped raise awareness for ALS but also witnessed a stunning pink sunset, slowly dipping, illuminating the Boulder skyline. BEE-YOOT-I-FUL!
Thankful for good health & my Colorado life.

Happy Thanksgiving 2013!
Thankful for so many things – family, friends, great health, sunshine, mountains, snow & my Colorado home (of course).
Found myself completely caught up in the holiday spirit this year. Signed up for not one but TWO 5K charity runs.
The trick was finishing Louisville’s 9am Turkey Trot (supporting Flood Relief) & driving to Boulder in time for the 10am Community Food Share 5K. Backseat full of non-perishables for 9am’s charity & canned goods for the 10am run.
Crazy huge turnout for my hometown Turkey Trot. Excited to see 2 trucks filled with donations. Feel super lucky & blessed that my home & most of Louisville was spared from September’s epic (500 year) flood.
Ran this first 5K mighty fast, almost breaking 21 minutes. Quick photo with Santa — in the car & off to Boulder.
Community Food Share’s mission is to ensure that no one in Boulder and Broomfield Counties goes hungry.
What better mission than to feed our neighbors. Dropped off 3 bags of canned goods. Big smile.
Sunshine, warm weather – and another big crowd, all ready to run. Beautiful view of the Flatirons, just east of CU campus.
Ended the day at M’s brother’s home for turkey & fixin’s. No holding back this holiday – already ran off my calories 🙂
