Memorial Day weekend.  Unofficial start of SUMMER.  Estimated 42 million Americans on the road next 3 days.  Lucky for me, notta lotta folks holidaying outside Laramie WYOMING.  LOL>

Backpack, run clothes & – dog treats.  Pup couldn’t be more excited.  Quick stop in Cheyenne for [Sunday’s 50K] bib pick-up, hour highway more: I-80 Vedauwoo exit.  Dirt-flying gritty ranch roads.  Airbnb SUCCESS!  Secluded, no cell, no TV, fenced yard, FRESH eggs & two Tom turkeys.

Overstimulated Pup.  In/out in/out.  Near perfect weather – early season, no bugs – finally, just left the door ajar.  Smell of fried eggs inside, wild Wyoming outdoors.  Paw-friendly Ro destination.

Stars, BIG sky.  Zero people noise, ambient light void.  BESTEST sleeping weather.  Early pre-dawn rise.  Watched a herd of ELK before booting-up for Saturday’s hike in nearby Vedauwoo.  Camped here couple years back with Ash & Tom.  Easy 4-mile loop, 8000ft elevation.  Welcome Summer!

Quick supply run into Laramie (always room for COCONUT CREAM PIE).

Gobble, gobble.  Clatter of big bird Toms.  Back on the Ranch/Home on the Range.  Pup now on chipmunk patrol, guarding the perimeter.  Popcorn & a DVD before surrendering our day done.

Wyoming unplugged.  Gotta/hafta/must do.  Highly recommended 😊

DNS, did not START.  Travel, lodging, meal planning – even bib pickup, but failed to START on race day.  GUTTED.

nicknamed ‘the Equality State’

Autumn hike on the Divide, late breakfast in Georgetown.  Barreled home, swapped out backpacks, dropped Ro at the kennel.  Hour-15 drive to Cheyenne, bib pickup deadline 5pm.  SUPER Saturday 😊Haven’t spent lotta time in Wyoming’s capitol city, never stayed overnight.  Hotel-splurged this trek, opting for a good nite’s sleep before Sunday’s inaugural Cheyenne Marathon.  Early 6am start.

‘though just a short drive from Colorado, Wyoming stands on its own.  Cowboy culture.  Cowboy boots, cowboy statues, cowboy museums, even a cowboy-ridden Bronc dons the state’s license plate.  Snapped Downtown shots of Cheyenne’s Wild West past.  State capitol though was a bust – under construction, who knew?  All signs pointed to a successful Wyoming x2 finish.

Alarm rang early.  Feverish all nite, not great sleeps – elevated temp would linger thru Tuesday.  Just PUSH through?  ARGH.  Run/not run, what to do?  Not STARTING, soooo much worse than DQ’ing/trying, coming up short.  Today: big MISS, runner FAIL.

Hotel check-out, early Colorado return.  Traffic-delayed downtown.  Street blocked, two runners slowly made their way across – shorts, headphones, eyes forward/focused/in the zone – that should’ve been ME.  STINGS, still stings — core of my soul 😡

Back-of-mind questions next race – after DQ’ing: will I finish or late-in-race drop again?  after DNS’ing: will I even show up?  Am I healthy enough to keep marathoning?  Should I skip my next flight & just stay home?  Have I aged out?  Do I now drop to Halves?  HEAD demons.

Week following, notta lotta running.  I’m a sore loser – or in this case, a sore ‘non-Starter’.

Maine next weekend.  Stephen just an hour-half away, will be good to see a friendly face 😊  Positive note?  New Denver doc/gastro specialist provided a full bag of meds, guidance/diet instructions.  Step closer.  Discovery, diagnosis, resolution.

SUPER Saturday: Bozeman ➜ Yellowstone ➜ Earthquake Lake ➜ Ennis Montana.

Fishing lodge check-in (closest sleeps to Sunday’s marathon finish).  Dinner bit of a struggle.  Folks arriving Friday nite cleaned out much of the local restaurants’ provisions.  Out of box pasta?  Bigger surprise.  Montana’s TROUT capitol – completely outta TROUT.  Sad face ☹

Early to bed, early to rise.  Exxon Pump Station 5:15am.  Bib pick-up, hopped aboard a school bus.  Hour-15 minute ride over dirt to today’s Big Sky start.  High in the mountains: elevation 8,560ft.  Steep decline first 15 miles; steady flat run followed, past multiple cattle ranches to Ennis.

Scenic MONTANA, surrounded by peaks & mountain flowers; mirror-similar to Colorado but with biting flies.  Pre-race coated with insect repellent, kept the majority at bay (big RD thanks).

‘America the Beautiful’ acapella-sung by a Boston-based runner.  Unexpected & super patriotic.

Small marathon field, under 100.  50-50 mix of locals & out-of-state participants (destination location/Yellowstone hour-half away).  Stayed close to 2 runners from Helena.  Pushed too hard too early, but mighty good to have company.  They ended at 13 (Halfers); quick goodbyes, I ran on.

Struggled ALL second half.  Sad Strava stat: 12-minute/pace miles 15 thru 20.

Temp cracked 85 degrees, personal puke fest started at 23.  Tough day at the office.  Heat staggered this one in – but a finish.  Frown upside down: afternoon soaked at nearby Norris Hot Springs.

Sunday nite HOME, out again Thursday morn.  Next adventure: Alaska!  ⛰️🐻🐟
