Run Challenges

Run the Year Motto:  Run, Crawl, Walk, Conquer, Dominate 2,016 miles in 2016

November 2016 update: 2 steps forward, one step back.  After completing my greatest # of miles in October, followed that with my weakest run month of 2016 – only 98.7 miles total.  Shared time with family in Orlando, then again during Thanksgiving week.  No regrets.  Struggled accumulating miles during the later stages of chemo (3 remaining treatments in December).

Checking-in mid-month December (& again at year-end), in an attempt to stay motivated/push hard/& finish 2,016 miles in 2016.  Will have to bang out > 200 miles one-last-time to meet the challenge.  Can’t fail if you don’t try 🙂

2 month focus (November & December): FINISH STRONG

Race ReCap:  two East Coast marathons: sub-4 miss (by mere minutes) at Marshall University in Huntington WV, just over 5 hours the following weekend in Orlando…but won my Age Group 🙂   36th consecutive month marathoning – 3 solid YEARS!

Mileage ReCap:  weakest month of the year, ended November at 1,771.7 miles (76 short, one month to go).

Happy December, KEENAN

This is it! You are in the final stretch and it is time to Finish Strong! How many miles can you add to your total before December 31st? What will the benchmark be for 2017?

Re-commit to running/walking your way through the holiday season. Keep the miles coming and prepare yourself for your best year yet when the clock strikes 12:00am on January 1st.

You have come a long way this year. Hold your head high and be proud of your progress. Finish the year strong and healthy and ready for more in the new year ahead. You’ve got this!

October 2016 update: Most consistent training & greatest # of miles logged all year – 222 miles total.  After a disappointing DNF in Boulder, added 3 FINISHES to my marathon tally…including two last-minute race additions in Fort Collins & Nebraska.

2 month focus (November & December): FINISH STRONG

4 races to go, 2 each month – including an early December trail marathon in Death Valley Nat’l Park.

Race ReCap:  another 3 marathon month – one in mountains (Cache la Poudre Canyon), one on the Plains (Oregon Trail Run of Nebraska) & one by the ocean (Ocean State Marathon in Narragansett RI).

Mileage ReCap:  Back on track again, ended October at 1,673 miles (only 7 miles short of goal).

Run the Year – November Newsletter

Why is it so easy to focus on our short comings and failures, yet so difficult to step back and appreciate our strengths and accomplishments?

It may be human nature to be self critical, but November is the month to give thanks. November is the month to focus on everything we have instead of what we are missing.

This month give yourself a break from the negative voices in your head and instead focus on the positive. Rather than focus on how far you have to go, celebrate how far you have come. Take a moment each day to be thankful that you have the ability to get in miles, to move forward…  You have done some amazing things this year and traveled a lot of miles. Take a moment to be proud and thankful for every one!

September 2016 update:  HUGE travel month – 3 marathons, travelled from the deserts of Utah to Moscow’s Red Square.  Cancer schmancer.  Good days, bad days…but overall, mighty blessed with a crazy, FULL life.

Unfortunately, finished even further behind on total miles but don’t give up on me yet.  Head’s back in the game.  Super STRONG run months ahead.  Whole lotta marathoning every Fall.  Ran 14 consecutive weeks in 2015 – still totally doable.

2 month focus (September & October): STAMINA

Race ReCap:  3 marathon month – 2 at altitude (Colorado Springs & Big Cottonwood Canyon) and RUSSIA.  17 years after an early-career expat assignment (almost a lifetime ago), reconnected with my former workmate Dima & finished the Moscow Marathon.  Course trekked thru Moscow center, along the Moskva River, past the Kremlin.  HUGE life experience!

Mileage ReCap:  Ended September at 1,451 miles (61 miles short of goal).

Life’s an amazing journey.   And although running is a HUGE part of my current, still plenty of time for a Fly Casting lesson with a neighbor’s friend’s brother — Graeme, visiting from New Zealand.

Happily, I was a natural…but you’re gonna have to trust me, no video proof (clip below is my neighbor Larry) 🙂
