Marathoning

Charlotte ✈️ Dallas ✈️ Denver

Itinerary home from my 50K adventure.  4 miles from my DFW connection?  the Irving Marathon. Called airline, pushed out my connecting flight from Friday to Sunday morning.  No rental car needed, only extra $$ hotel expense.  26.2 miles, shortest distance I’d run in 11 days.  Absolutely!

Taxi, Marriott 9th floor view.  Bib pick-up, fancy upscale pizza & sleeps.  No prepping, no commute — five minute walk to start line.  Sweet treat after self-crewing 50Ks Beaumont to Bluefield.

4000 runners, well-organized event.  Hung with the 2:30 Half Marathon group for 13 miles, dug the low-key personality of our pace-gal Stacy.  Police officer by day, strong runner.  Goal to hang for their race then run-jog-walk 2nd half as Texas temps climbed.  Reality — kept same steady pace for 22 miles. Walked a mile to bring heart rate down in 80-degree heat then jogged-in remaining distance.

Mainly Marathons-buddy Angela at the finish, she’s Dallas-native.  Connections got us into the VIP backdrop — full hot breakfast & a large sweet tea.  Good to know Strong Texan Women 💪

No regrets, ‘bonus’ marathon day.  That said, Colorado ready.  Mexican Easter awaits.

Same course last 2 days of Series, Bluefield University campus.  Start line moved 100ft on Thursday to assure a legit state o’ Virginia finish.  Town straddles 2 states.

Cool temps, sunshine skies — Blue Ridge Mountains — awesome day for another 50K.

Count ’em y’all.  Me & my giant lips.  11 days, 11 states, 11 50Ks.  What seemed entirely unhinged while packing up the rental in Beaumont with supplies – REALITY.

“Take Me Home Country Roads” John Denver-Appalachia start, local NBC affiliate from Roanoke (VA) covered our finish.  HILLS!  Almost 2500ft of vert.

Sleeps in Charlotte, home Easter morning… but not before a ‘bonus’ marathon in Irving… only 4 miles from my DFW flight connection.  Gotta/must do, right? 😉

#50K every day

Flat bike path ’round a dog park in Mills River, North Carolina.  Overwhelmed with pain, struggled to move forward this day.  8 days of 50Ks, body feels battered; couple that with blistered sunburnt lips & huge lack of calories — Day 8 was a BUG day.  Notta lotta left.

Dejected/head-down, sat on a bench mile 28/29, spirit broken.  Spanish lady/an angel walked up, placed a hand gently on my shoulder.  Flood gates opened, just bawled like a baby.  Scared the living bejeebers outta her – LOL>  Apologized, got up & got it done.  I think when you push so hard/so long/so many days, emotions get crazy over-amplified.

Miracle 2 — listened to advice.  Drove to a local Ingles.  Pharmacist provided numbing cream plus several over-the-counter lip balms for reminder of the trip.  Numbing only temporary — but allowed me to load-in calories & grab a good nite’s sleep.  Morning — broke apart lips (sealed shut overnight), cup of motel coffee, dabbed/wiped up all bloody portions & reapplied meds.

Woke to RAIN.  Prettiest course of the series: Steele Creek Park, Bristol Tennessee.  Winding dirt trail, pear trees in blossom, scenic pedestrian bridge.  Strictly looking at Garmin time, Day 9 mimicked Day 8 results.  Reality — walked lotta miles with the run family ’til they finished their distances, then jogged out my extra 50K miles.  AWESOME recovery day.

My God — right on time, all the time ❤️
