34 months ago, ran my first marathon — in Anchorage Alaska. Hit the wall at mile 21, decided no more marathons. Done.
2014 goal: Ironman Boulder — strategy: focus training on swim & bike; marathon once a month.
Ran my 2nd marathon in Tucson in shorts & snow flurries (only an hour-fifteen from Mexico). Lesson learned: Pack for all kinds of weather. Baton Rouge, my 3rd marathon, was BEAUTIFUL — one of my favourite runs…came completely unexpected. Lesson learned: Don’t pre-judge. Not everything in Louisiana is Duck Dynasty. Austin — humidity…even in February. Atlanta — hills. Lesson learned: check out the online course map in advance. Salt Lake City — altitude. Maine Coast — dunes = hills.
After June’s Minneapolis Marathon was cancelled [while queued on the Start Line…yeah, still bitter] registered last minute for Grandma’s Marathon in Duluth. Arrived 11pm night before, 3 hour drive to Duluth, no hotel accommodations, slept in my rental. Result? PR & my first sub-4 🙂 Missoula — hiked & camped in Glacier Nat’l Park. 2 bear sightings: grizzly juvenile & an adult black bear. Bucket-list adventure included a heli-tour past the Canadian border. Lesson learned: not always ’bout marathoning, enjoy the journey.
Pics of folks running in beanies & snow flurries on Monument Marathon’s (western Nebraska) website. My experience? Wilted in 95 degree heat & my first 5 hour+ finish, a PW. Met 50-stater Dave & Marathon Maniac Stacy, while cooling down outside the med tent. Lesson learned: there’s a whole amazing community of runners attempting to run all 50 States. Newport (Rhode Island) — cool, ocean-side run. Lesson learned: the journey is SOOOO much better with friends at the Finish Line. Thanks Dawn & Stephen!
Fave of my first Dozen: Mesa Falls (Idaho), 30 minutes west of the Tetons. Spent my birthday at Old Faithful, followed that with hikes in Yellowstone & Grand Teton Nat’l Park. FAAANNNTASTIC!

Marathon Maniac pal Stacy got a group of us Maniacs excited – signed up months & months ago for this weekend’s trail marathon in Kanopolis State Park. Rural Kansas, no hotels for 45 miles – no worries, Stacy thought of that too. Rented a cabin nearby…those go fast, she’s a thinker & a planner. Super lucky, I run with a good crowd 🙂
Stacy, husband Dan, Mike & Ed (both from Austin) travelled early Friday, snapping shots with the World’s Largest Czech Egg (who knew, right?), board cutouts of Buffalo Bill & Annie Oakley…among other wacky roadside attractions. I on the other hand, road tripped 7 hours alone. Sometimes work gets in the way of weekend plans. No arguments — I’m a huge fan of paying my mortgage — & ya’ll know I’m a car karaoke champ. LOL>
Grabbed a bag of roadside Fritos & gassed up in Burlington (last Colorado stop). Would be driving long stretches of Kansas highway with few opportunities for fuel.
*pre-race text from Stacy*
It will be cold in the morning, hot at midpoint, and breezy at the finish.
You can have a drop bag that you’ll see at 13 and again at 17. My husband will transport your bags for us.
There’s an unmanned aid station (jugs of water) at 7 and 22.
There are 5 water crossings, the last 2 are waist deep. Bring a Baggie for your phone. After that is the .25 mile sand pit much sandier than Bataan for sure.
We’re running around the lake. I’ll go over the map with you all fri night and sat morning during breakfast. Pretty hard to get lost but good bearings always help.
Get ready for “holy cow”!!!! Every 4 miles is something new!
We’re at Kanopolis State Park in the Buffalo Bill Cabin (#5). Anyone bringing a harmonica?

Yep, those are the GPS coordinates – state road highways thru rural ‘no cell service’ counties. High beam driving – only me & the bugs on my windshield. No people land. 11pm arrival; cabin door left unlocked – zzz’s ‘til 530am.
Sub-freezing temps, cool morning. Planted near a wood-burning fireplace ‘til our 630 start.
Narrow single trail thru rutted prairie. Blah, blah, blah – waist deep WATER CROSSING – those were the words rolling in my head.
Still early, feeling STRONG, rolled fast down a dry canyon gulch – runner jam, brackish water & mud ahead. Moved in front & leaped hard…in deep thick mud. How deep? Came out without a shoe. Maybe settle down & think before I leap, huh? Another runner helped me pull my shoe loose. Left hand smelled like sewer rest of day, not sure that was water 🙁
Up, down rolling canyon hills & long grassland treks.
IT band left knee: sharp pain, mile 11. Cruelest injury ever – could run as long & hard as I wanted UPHILL, but downgraded from run/trot/walk on all downhill stretches. Luckily I made peace with UPHILL last year.
Quick refuel at mile 13. Port-a-potty on a flat-bed trailer at mile 14 (kinda ghetto, but thanks), then looped my way up & down back to mile 18 – right foot still dry…log crossings every stream bed. What was Stacy talking about?
More Fritos (don’t be a hater, a guy’s got eat), climbed a cattle gate (another marathon first) then…WATER.
First baptism is a memory you soon don’t forget.
Cold river water. Guy in front of me was taking off his shoes but I knew better. This crossing only hit my thighs…they’re only gonna get deeper (Stacy’s never steered me wrong). Wore a pair of old Newtons today; they’d not make the Colorado return home.
Last 7 miles: canyon arroyos, deep rutted grassland and WATER. 9 crossings in total, 4 waist deep. As the day heated up, I warmed up to the water. By the last 2 [water crossings], no hesitation – I was a pro.
FAVE all-time trail run. Downed burgers & a hot dog – getting spoiled at these grassroots trail events. I’ll be back.
LOVE LOVED my finishers ‘medal’, a hand-welded Rockin’ K horseshoe. FAAANNNTASTIC day!

Up before dawn Sunday, started the long road trip home.
Afternoon plans? Dinner & a movie. Fancy fish take-out & a soon-to-be movie classic, Avalanche Sharks, w/ Ash & Tom. LOL>
After a snowboarder inadvertently starts a major avalanche, the moving snowfield uncovers and wakes a prehistoric “snow shark” which had been trapped beneath. The shark develops an appetite for human flesh and the staff at the Twin Pines Ski Resort begins getting reports of missing people and strange finned creatures moving under the snow.
- rural Kansas sunrise
- meanwhile back in Colorado…
- soon-to-be movie classic on Ash & Tom’s Jumbotron
- Great White terror on the slopes — skiing will never be the same 🙂
Kansas Car Karaoke, 7 hours (in reverse)
Quick shower at the Cow Palace in Lamar. 2 hour drive ‘cross the Oklahoma Panhandle, diner dinner in New Mexico. Big thanks to my co-pilot Dave – talk about Sports Trivia…today I chauffeured the King. Completely took my mind off the blowing snow.
Met up with Dave’s friend, Cindy, another Colorado 50 Stater – unloaded, snapped a few pics, then diner dined at the Rabbit Ear Cafe (it was this or Pizza Hut – HA!) Our small group of Dust Bowl runners were greeted by the local Chamber of Commerce – super nice – yep, we’re kinda a big deal in Clayton. Ya’ll know that’s how I roll. LOL>
Head hit the pillow early – although tomorrow’s marathon day…so was today 🙂
Doubled our drive time next morning – no more snow but woke to a quarter-inch of ice. Inched down curvy canyon roads into Clayton Lake State Park, no drama…took it slow & easy.
18 degrees. Coldest start of my New Mexico marathons (3rd run this year). Borrowed layers for the Start – had packed short-sleeves & shorts this day.
My legs woke slow – still stiff from Saturday’s marathon…but my head was a go. Cold temps, snow on the ground & SUNSHINE. Days like this, I run with a perma-smile.
AND the view – WOW! Take poor little Lamar Colorado & up the panorama 10x. Course hugged scenic Lake Clayton. Proudly collected 9 rubber bands today – 5 on my left arm, 4 on my right.
Only one small stretch on pavement…all coated in ice. Down to a crawl, still landed on my backside. Luckily sensed it was happening & went down pretty graceful.
Received good advice from a fellow marathoner on running my first DOUBLE. Took my first 2 laps at a slow 12-minute slog. AND she was right! 6-7 miles in the day’s run, my body DID adjust. Warmed up, legs moving, did another 2 laps with Greg & Barbara, a couple from Ames Iowa…then picked up pace – goal to lap them by loop 7 or 8 & finish last lap(s) together.
Trail turned to sloppy thick mud in sections. Not my first rodeo – jumped in both feet & tread thru the middle. No real avoiding it…best to embrace & enjoy the experience. Sunshine, antelope grazed nearby. Temps topped 40, turned into a beautiful day.
Today was about the journey – and training my body to marathon multiple days. 3 miles to go, legs stiffened again, struggled with left knee pain. Different from runner’s wall – today wasn’t mental, first time pushing my body 50+ miles over 2 days. Walked the next mile with a lady from Vegas. Karen, a cancer survivor, had lived a wild early life. Awesome stories – good therapy, body & soul.
Greg & Barbara tagged me as I slipped on rubber band #9 – one short loop ‘round the Dam to go. No concern ‘bout finish time so the 3 of us took a short detour to view the lake’s infamous dinosaur tracks. Far-out experience DURING a marathon 🙂
Marathon/ultra #59. FINISHED an hour slower than yesterday’s 26.2 urban-trail in Lamar – but no regrets. My first ever DOUBLE – two marathons, two days, two different states. FAAANNNTASTIC!
2016 Dust Bowl Day 5 – Full Marathon – March 27, 2016 – Clayton, NM

free State Park shower (AWESOME), then schlepped 6 ½ hours home. Weekend over? Heck no – it’s Easter.
Easter Sunday in March caught me by surprise (honestly, would have never scheduled a marathon run). Barreled home to share holiday tradition with Ash & Tom – our 3rd Easter pilgrimage to Casa Alegre. Mexican fiesta, olé! LOL>
