Coming off a marathon run last weekend AND 2 weeks of crazy cold sub-zero temps, thinkin’ this might be my best chance/motivation to complete gift purchases & send out holiday cards. Only 11 days ’til Christmas!
Think again…. received an email from Fort Collins hiking buddy, Cammy – Erik & her are free 2 of the next 3 weekends. Winter 14er hike? Heck yeah! (I’ll get holiday inspired next week 🙂 )
Teamed up with M & caravanned down I-25 to the Sangre de Cristo Range – destination: Blanca Peak. Located the pull-off from Highway 160 & managed maybe a quarter-mile off road before burrowing deep in mountain snow. Erik unloaded chains – determined their Subaru would make the journey UP.
Most cars can drive about 1.5 miles up before it gets rough. 4WD SUVs and trucks can slowly make it 3.25 miles to several pull-offs at 8,800’, before the road turns nasty.
As the clock ticked 1 (a.m.), pulled out sleeping bags & crashed for a few hours before tomorrow morning’s ascent. Ice formed on the inside of M’s jeep – all liquids froze except for a last minute Gatorade purchase. Cold, super cold!
3 of us crazies started the hike UP, catching the most beautiful pink sunrise. (M drove on to Alamosa for the day.) Snow was only wind-blown patchy in areas so I make an über dumb move & leave my snow shoes behind – opting for a lighter pack.
Another mile further we reached sunlight – warmth improved my spirit while ice dangled from my beard.
I struggled this day in knee-deep snow (why did I leave my shoes in the car? ARGH!) Found myself lagging far behind. Who wants to be that person? Decided this just wasn’t my day so I would head back – but needed to first catch Cammy & Erik. Not once but twice I almost reached the Super Hikers, only to see them complete their mini- snack break & push even further. LOL>
Snow is now waist-deep. Thinkin’ I’m D-U-N (done). Only .5 miles further to Como Lake. Totally do-able.
SUCCESS! Kicked back on the frozen lake, I refuel & catch some zzz’s.
Return hike is soooo much easier – no longer cutting a trail UP in snow. 11 mile roundtrip winter hike. No Blanca Peak today but gotta thank Team Ft Collins for pushing me this day. I’ll be back…in the summer 🙂
Wait, wait – this tale’s not finished.
Back on the highway & only another 15 minutes down the road, we take in an hour at Great Sand Dunes Nat’l Park. Sand dunes & snow — followed by Mexican food in Walsenburg. FANTASTIC finish, FANTASTIC day!

Down from Pikes Peak just after noon; too early to head home. So much more to see in Manitou Springs!
Lunch & souvenir shopping followed by a quick tour of Garden of the Gods. No matter how many times I visit Manitou Springs, still amazed by the sheer diversity of Pikes vs Garden of the Gods. Majestic snow-capped mountains distanced only 20 minutes from Grand Canyon-like colour & eroded rock formations – omnipotent, inspired, serene.
Unfortunately our drive-thru was interrupted by a freak rain storm – which turned into a flash flood within minutes. Torrents of water collected and rolled down roadways. Spent 30 minutes in the Visitor Center waiting for the storm to pass, stopped briefly for 3 last photo opps within Garden of the Gods, then on to Cave of the Winds.
Our group lantern tour started at 5pm – no rest for the weary. [Next time I host a large group, probably need to scale down the activity schedule, it was definitely jam packed. Didn’t plan enough time for meals – takes an hour longer to secure tables & coordinate food likes/dislikes. Live & learn.]
Cave of the Winds: might have forgotten to mention that we’d be ducking under 4 foot rock walls 🙂
That said, nobody backed out as we crouched low and listened to spooky cave tales of George & Nellie from our guide Alec – all while carrying flamed lanterns. Super fun adventure.
Hour-half drive back, dinner – then games? Nope, not this night. Everyone crashed & had no intention in starting tomorrow’s journey before 730am. HA!
LOVE LOVE sharing my Colorado home with family. Best day!
- lunch queue – Adams Mountain Cafe
- Balanced Rock

Skydiving in Colorado? Talk about a complete 180 turn from my NYC life 2 years ago.
Like to think it was all my idea, but gotta give credit to Annmarie who peer-pressured me & John into buying into a Living Social (Groupon) deal a couple of months earlier. Annmarie sent the link, John purchased – and 2 days later I manned up & then we were 3.
After another solid week of winter weather, met up with my 2 Denver-based friends under sunny skies & temps in the 50’s.
Out of the Blue Skydiving is located in Penrose, approx 45 minutes west of Colorado Springs. After watching a 15-minute training video, we signed waivers, weighed in, suited up and met our tandem partners. Took a few group photos, then loaded onto a truck for the short trip to our plane. Unfortunately, a solo parachutist (her 3rd time) dropped from the sky & landed hard, damaging 2 vertebrae in her lower spine. We waited for an ambulance & sheriff to attend to the accident (yeah, immediately before we were to jump). Back on the truck, we roll toward the plane. My video guy Rusty films another outtake & off we go.
Ok now my stomach is churning – tinged with both excitement & fear. JD (my tandem partner) continues to engage me in conversation. I try but my eyes are fixed, staring out the window. Mind is racing – gonna take a mammoth-sized gut check. JD shows his wrist altimeter – 2,000 feet more climb left. More talk. JD assures me I’m now attached to him by 4 links. Snug, tight – this is gonna happen soon.
Door opens & life pace speeds 10x. Sound of air rushes in. Loud. 4 parachutists are sucked out of the opening. Never saw these guys jump – folks are exiting both frontwards and backwards. I can’t think. Life is happening to me. Move up, move up. I scoot forward on the bench. Annmarie is at the door with her partner Andrew. Like a pro she falls forward and plunges out of the plane. This girl has no fear – true superstar. Move up, move up. I grab for the bar and awkwardly push my feet out the plane.
Wait. Wait. What am I doing? The wind is crazy loud. Hold on, I need to think. The human body has a strong, instinctual survival mode. That said, it’s the most empowering feeling to turn off your mind & best that fear.
Cross your arms, head back and thrust forward with your hips – thrust outward into open space.
So what were you thinking? Were you scared?
Life is happening to you, it’s all so fast. HUGE adrenalin rush, free falling. Amazing, faith-building, leap of courage – must be how eagles feel. Soaring with air currents. Flash of mountain scapes beside me, no they’re below me. Excitement, joy – but absolutely zero fear. I’m flying, the wind pushing around me.
Parachute opens, we abruptly shoot upward – and it (the adrenalin fix) ends. Everything is now crazy quiet. We’re floating. I’m aware of where I am, how high I am. My mind turns back on.
JD asks about my ride & if I want to spin – experiencing a full 360 Colorado panorama. Pikes Peak. How crazy is that?
Feet up, soon we’re landing. Quick turn into the air field. Down, down. Dust flies. Textbook landing.
Heart’s still racing. I watch John land across the field & spot Annmarie right of me. YES! AMAAAAZING!
Group hug-it-out moment, walk back to the office & discard gear. Pics, signed certificates & last minute goodbyes to our tandem guides. One of the most exhilarating, life changing moments in my life. I will not forget this day or the folks I shared this day.
Change takes courage. Say no mas to your day-to-day drag. Wish I had had the courage to live simply sooner. We get so hung up on what we’re supposedly to have, supposedly to do – that we miss opportunities to LIVE.
Lunch at the Broadmoor in Colorado Springs. 5-star ending to a 5-star day. LOVE LOVE LOVE my Colorado life!
